As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more nostalgic for the way that i felt when listening to a certain artist or song for the first time. one artist that i’ve been having on repeat within the past month is Santigold. I wont lie, I found out about Santigold in highschool through watching Gossip Girl. To be more exact, in Season 2 Episode 4, with the song “Shove It”.
More recently, I’ve been super into her self-titled album, “Santigold”. This album truly features hit after hit, with L.E.S. Artistes, Say Aha, and of course, Shove it (featuring Spank Rock) . This album perfectly encaptures the 2000s spirit, with loud, speech-like vocals, intricate drums, beats, and random ad libs.
i kept listening to the song “Creator” before my accounting exam, and I think it had a pretty positive impact on my grade. its a good hype up song, I definitely recommend.
The album does have a lot of variety, however. I love her song “Anne.” It’s a complete contrast to the rest of the album, with its slower beats and dreamier vocals. Santigold has found a way to transcend the boundaries of “genres” and clearly takes elements from so many places to create her own visionary sound. Overall, 9/10 album.
